Hampton Inn, Ottawa, February 26, 2011 — Over 125 participants attended this year's Retirement Planning Workshops offered by RTO-ERO, Ottawa-Carleton District 27. As usual, French and English workshops were presented in different rooms by a slate of local and provincial presenters, including representatives from Johnson’s Insurance. Some 27 volunteers from the RTO local also helped make the day a success.
Furthermore, a new service was provided this year that has the local Executive excited.
For the first time in the history of District 27, simultaneous sign language interpretation was provided by request to a group of French language hearing impaired participants. Organizers say the group was able to take part only because of the work of two hired interpreters who deciphered the often technical jargon associated with retirement planning presentations.
District 27 President, Ray Ball, spoke enthusiastically about the sign language interpretation service. "District 27 has always prided itself in being diverse and inclusive. For example, we are the only truly bilingual district in Ontario, with a French and English magazine [Horizons 27] and a comprehensive website in both languages. Now we extend that ideal to the deaf community."
Ray, who was elected Ottawa-Carleton District 27 president this year, added that "because workshops are delivered orally for the most part, our deaf participants wouldn't have been able to take part without signing interpretation."
When asked about the difference between interpreting and translation, Ray explained, "Interpreters deal with spoken words while translators work with written words."
